The Differences Between Psychics, Mediums, Channelers, Spirit Guides, Extraterrestrial Messages, and More—Fascinating And Scientifically Supported!
By Nancy F. Clark, as seen on Forbes. About Me
Psychics, Mediums, Intuitives, Healers, ESP, Extraterrestrial Messages, Messages in Water, Remote Viewing, Precognition
For those who are new to these topics, here is a glossary of terms commonly used in the world of channeling.
Psychics are also known as Mediums or Intuitives. They are individuals who use forms of extrasensory perception (ESP) to reveal information that is not available to our 5 senses. I prefer to say, “A psychic is pulling information from the quantum field.” With my physics background, I’m seeing that extrasensory perception is merging with quantum physics—which has found that consciousness is primary to matter. There’s a variety of methods these people might use: telepathy, clairvoyance, psychometry, and remote viewing are some of them. In my course I will discuss each of these—and a few others.
When studying physics at Berkeley in the sixties and then working in rocket science at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, you never would have heard me say, “ESP is interesting and there might be something to it!” But for decades now I’ve been studying it and I insist on giving you links to science research for your in-depth studies to help you understand it for yourself. 🙂

Mediums, also known as Psychic Mediums
Mediumship is the practice of people known as mediums that facilitate communication between spirits of the dead and living human beings.
Mediums are most often asked to contact friends or relatives who are deceased. A medium may be consulted to solve a crime or find a missing person or to clear a haunted building.
I can’t let this go without sharing information from physicist Russell Targ who was working for the Stanford Research Institute (SRI). He was asked to help in 1974 to help find Patty Hearst who had been kidnapped from her Berkeley apartment. He brought in Pat Price who was a retired police commissioner. Price had produced great results using his ESP talents for SRI and for this case. As Russell Targ says, “As Price turned the pages of the police mug book filled with hundreds of photos, suddenly he pointed to one of them and announced, ‘That’s the ringleader.'” The man was Donald DeFreeze, who was indeed later identified. Price also described the type and location of the kidnap car, enabling the police to find it within minutes (Unfortunately, Patty had already been removed from the car.) That remarkable event is one reason Targ believes in ESP and continued his studies in this field.
Well known psychic mediums include James Van Praagh, John Edward, Theresa Caputo, Uri Geller, Sonia Choquette and of course many others.
Intuitives and Healers
I discuss these extraterrestrial messengers and many others on my website.
Extraterrestrial Messages In Crop Circles
Crop circles appear all over the world and may have been occurring for quite a long time. There’s a woodcut dating back to the 1600’s known as the “Mowing Devil,” which shows a circular pattern in a crop field with a devilish creature creating it. Many occur in the Wiltshire area of the U.K. where energy ley lines may be concentrated. When scientists analyze manmade designs, such as the ones formed for Ancient Aliens, they can see these don’t contain the high energy distortions such as enlarged or extended growth nodes, or layers showing changes in direction. These formations are produced during a brief period of time. Some observers have seen a bright ball of light above the field as it’s forming. Since they’re not manmade, I have no hesitation in saying they’re extraterrestrial messages. Please let others know that when they say, “Doug and Dave made them.” I will go into more detail in future articles on my website.
Messages In Water, Emoto Proof
While we’re contemplating extraterrestrial messages, I think we should also include water messages. Do you agree? If so, pass this on to your equally enlightened friends. Thank you! Dr. Masaru Emoto did an excellent job of putting thought messages into water and then flash-freezing them and showing the results. Take a look.

After: Tokyo’s tap water after 500 people sent their energies of love . . .
Telepathy is accessing a person’s thoughts and feelings through ESP, which aren’t readily available through our “other” 5 senses.
Archangels, Spirit Guides. Spirit Animals, Departed Loved Ones, Ascended Masters
I love this quote from Gabby Bernstein:
“When you get stuck in a fear-based thought or pattern you can turn to your guides to help lead you back to love. To receive their guidance, all that’s required is your willingness to surrender your fear and see with spiritual sight.”
There are different types of spirit guides. You may have some that are for your guidance alone. These are referred to as Guardian Angels. Spirit angels or spirit animals could be associated with a pet which has passed. Or they could possess a skill which alerts you to something you have a need to know.
Archangels are powerful spirit guides. Archangel Michael is the one to receive when you feel lost. Archangel Raphael is associated with healing and Archangel Gabriel assists with communication. Call on Archangel Ariel to use her to help protect the environment or Archangel Chamuel to help bring peace and love to the world.
Ascended masters (to be seen independent of a religion) were once living beings, such as Buddha, Jesus, St Francis, Vishnu, St Germaine, and many more. They help humanity’s ascension.
You may receive guidance from one of these spirits at just the right time. This type of meaningful coincidence, not connected by strict cause-and-effect, is what Carl Jung called synchronicity in the 1920s. It means two or more events that appear to be connected in a meaningful way but are causally unrelated. This is one of my favorite things. Every time this happens, I look up and silently say, “Thank you.” It has saved my life twice and has caused me to meet interesting people and discover fascinating ideas.
Psychologist and consciousness pioneer whom I respect, Professor Stanley Krippner, says that shamans are “community-assigned magico-religious professionals who deliberately alter their consciousness in order to obtain information from the ‘spirit world.’ They use this knowledge and power to help and to heal members of their community, as well as the community as a whole.”
In 1968 when Carlos Castaneda’s book The Teachings of Don Juan was published, he introduced the world to the shaman Don Juan.
A spiritual meditation is a practice you do with the desire to connect with a higher power. It is about more than stress reduction or relaxation. Some examples of this are loving-kindness or metta meditation and trance states in Shamanistic traditions.
Clairvoyance is the ability to gain information about a person, object, location, or an event through ESP. A person who does that is known as a clairvoyant—one who sees clearly.
Clairvoyance is the psychic ability to see people or objects and sense the emotional state, irrespective of the distance involved. The clairvoyant can also pick up on past or sometimes future events.
Clairvoyance and the Akashic Records
The Akashic Records are part of the Earth’s aura—or as I believe a holographic information field for the entire universe—on which impressions of every person who ever lived, including their thoughts and feelings; every event, no matter how minor; and all possible concepts are completely and permanently impressed. Many clairvoyants who tune into the past, including a lot of psychic detectives, read the Akashic records in order to get their information.
Clairaudience is a form of psychic channeling where the medium hears messages in their mind and then translates them.
Psychometry or Clairsentience
This is the ability to touch an object, or a person, or stand at a location, and sense the energy.
Kirlian Photography and Auras
Kirlian Photography is a process that captures a biofield or aura of persons, plants or objects. It was first shown by Seymon Kirlian from Krasnodar, Russia.
I became interested in the 1970s, when Thelma Moss, a psychologist at UCLA, conducted extensive research in Kirlian Photography. Her research was exciting to me, but embarrassing to UCLA at the time and they would not fund her. Have you noticed this happens often when new research makes discoveries in the “paranormal?”
Kairomancy is a term coined by dream researcher Robert Moss. It involves recognizing signs and signals from your dreams.
Nonlocality, Entanglement, Morphic Resonance, and Creative Evolution—Beyond Darwin
I believe we should pay closer attention to scientist Rupert Sheldrake, author of Morphic Resonance. He asks us to question what we think we know and decide if our current science, religion or cultural dogma is blinding us. For example, “Nothing can go faster than the speed of light.” Sheldrake’s Ted Talk questioning this was initially removed. Physics has recently demonstrated that we can entangle or couple 2 particles with a laser beam and then take 1 to a distant location or even into space. Then when something is done to one, such as reversing its rotation, the other one reacts at the same time, instantaneously, faster than the speed of light.
This is Nonlocality—it doesn’t matter how far away it is. When it was surmised, this is what Einstein referred to as “spooky action at a distance.”
The morphogenetic field of a species determines the future evolution of that species. This process is called morphic resonance. It establishes a form of heredity that deals with form, behavior, and organization.
Since physics was my area of study at Berkeley, a long time ago, I’m amazed at how it has changed. We now talk about “Probabilities” in quantum physics in relation to which paths can possibly be taken. If this interests you, I recommend you also take a look at Theoretical Quantum Physicist Dr. Amit Goswami’s books and discussions.
Theoretical Quantum Physicist Dr. Amit Goswami, author of The Self-Aware Universe, is described as agreeing with a group of renegade scientists who have ventured into combining physics with the spiritual to interpret the unusual findings of experiments and to validate intuitions about the existence of a spiritual dimension of life.
In taking one of his classes, I asked him about Darwinian evolution and how it cannot explain large evolutionary gaps. He replied that Darwin was only right about a small part of evolution. Take a look at Amit’s book Creative Evolution.
A Seer or Visionary
This is related to someone who can access apparitions, visions, revelations, or prophecies.
Psychometry is the practice of gaining information about someone by holding a photograph or personal item of that person.
Telekinesis or Psychokinesis
A physical medium can connect to the spirit world but may also be able to produce physical actions, such as direct voices or moving objects through paranormal means–telekinesis. Telekinesis, also known as psychokinesis, is the power to move objects with your mind. We’ve found that if a young child is near someone bending a spoon with their mind, they are often then able to do it. But is that something you’d want? Imagine the mess.
Kinesiology, Radiesthesia, Dowsing, Divining
Did you know there is a quick and easy way to ask your body questions and get answers? Your body can lead you to what’s good for it through muscle response. You form your questions to “yes” and “no” answers. First you must test your body to see how it responds with a pendulum—or even merely to your body leaning forward or back. I use this later method when I’m buying vitamins, so I don’t have to hold a pendulum.
Even dowsing or divining uses the body’s muscle response which is amplified by the movement of a pendulum or dowsing rods. The first time–a long time ago– when I saw a friend hire a dowsing specialist, also known as a diviner, to determine where to have a water well dug on his property, I was secretly laughing. The diviner took some time circling around and then said, “Here!” The “here” was up a hillside and that didn’t make sense, so my friend had a company dig a well at the lowest point on the property instead. It was very expensive and they couldn’t find water. So then he had them dig at the “here” spot and reached water fairly quickly. With my physics background, I was perplexed and thought there must be some type of electromagnetic attraction. I began studying this and found that even tree branches can be used instead of metal rods. It’s your body that knows. Should we use this in restaurants? Please bring the dessert cart over here for a minute. Ah yes, I’ll have the pistachio cannoli.
Take a look at how Wikipedia describes this:
Paranormal events are purported phenomena described in popular culture, folk, and other non-scientific bodies of knowledge, whose existence within these contexts is described as beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. Notable paranormal beliefs include those that pertain to extrasensory perception (for example, telepathy), spiritualism and the pseudosciences of ghost hunting, cryptozoology, and ufology.
Parapsychology is the scientific study of the paranormal, especially extrasensory perception. Some scientific experiments of ESP, telepathy, clairvoyance, and more, were done in the early part of the twentieth century by Dr. Joseph Rhine and his wife Louisa at Duke University. More recent experiments are covered by Dr. Dean Radin in The Conscious Universe.
Premonition and Everyday Oracles
A premonition is a powerful intuitive feeling that something is going to happen. It is believed that important events sometimes send powerful emanations, which if believed could enable the people involved to prepare either for the best or for the worst.
I enjoy studying what cognitive neuroscientist Julia Mossbridge, author of The Premonition Code, says, “You can develop your premonition ability.” She says we can practice and increase our skill, “rather than a power possessed by a few exceptional modern-day oracles.”
Teleportation, Psychoportation, Wormholes, Stargates, Star Trek Transporter
Teleportation is the transportation of matter by means of simultaneous dematerialization and rematerialization in a different location. In psychism, psychoportation refers to the transport of matter by means of mind power. Instead of mind power, you could also consider using an Einstein-Rosen Bridge which is a Wormhole, or the Stargate Kurt Russell used, or the Star Trek Transporter. My choice is most definitely the Wormhole.
Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ (author of The Reality of ESP) are co-founders of the Stanford Research Institute’s (SRI) investigation into psychic abilities, primarily via Remote Viewing, which was government funded for 21 years, secretly. They found that this ability can be enhanced with training. Although Ingo Swann has been labeled “ridiculous” by the media, I think his information is beyond fascinating.
Conclusion and Follow Me
I hope you enjoy my joking around with my favorite topics, however I actually take these studies very seriously. As you probably realize, our current 3D culture likes to shut their eyes, or say “ridiculous.” If you want to help me get the word out, please let your friends know. Then I’ll deliver more information for everyone’s consumption! 🙂
